Is Copilot Worth It If You Already Pay for Microsoft 365? (Canada, 2026)

Prices checked 20 Oct 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page. Prices exclude HST. Figures are as of Oct 2026.

Updated 20 Oct 2026.

If your day already happens in Word, Excel, and Outlook, Copilot is often the assistant to try before you add another subscription. It is built into the Microsoft 365 plans below. If your day happens in Google docs, a job-site app, or a chat window, a Microsoft plan is a large detour for a small task.

This page uses prices from Microsoft’s own Canadian pages on 20 Oct 2026. It is general. It does not know which tier you already pay for. Personal and family plans point at the personal sample. A business tenant points at the business sample. Both are linked at the bottom.

The short answer

Often yes, when the work is already in Microsoft’s apps and you want the assistant in the same window as the file. Often no, when you would be buying Microsoft 365 only to get a chatbot, and a cheaper assistant already does that job.

Copilot is included with the consumer plans below, for the subscription owner. It is not a separate add-on I can quote as one flat fee on top of Personal or Family. There is also a limited free Copilot. Microsoft’s FAQ says that when you hit a limit you can upgrade or come back later, and that deeper use inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook comes with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription.

Microsoft 365 plans in Canadian dollars

From Microsoft’s Canadian comparison and the individual Copilot pricing page. Tax is extra. The Ontario HST illustration is 13%, from the CRA’s place-of-supply examples. Other provinces differ. This is not tax advice.

PlanPrice on Microsoft’s Canadian pagesIf Ontario HST (13%) is added
Microsoft 365 PersonalCAD $11.50 a month, or CAD $115 a year. One person. 1 TB.About C$13.00 a month, or about C$129.95 a year
Microsoft 365 FamilyCAD $14.50 a month, or CAD $145 a year. Up to 6 people. 2 TB shared.About C$16.39 a month, or about C$163.85 a year
Microsoft 365 PremiumCAD $27.00 a month, or CAD $270 a year, on the comparison page, for the plan with extensive Copilot use beyond Family. The individual page uses the name Premium for that plan.About C$30.51 a month, or about C$305.10 a year
Microsoft 365 ProCAD $135.00 on the individual Copilot pricing page. I did not see a separate yearly price next to it. Personal on that page is labelled per month. Confirm Pro’s billing period on the page.About C$152.55 if $135 is the monthly price

A few limits that change the decision:

  • On Family, Premium, and Pro, Copilot features in the apps are for the subscription owner. Microsoft says they are not shared with the other people on the plan. Storage and the desktop apps can be shared. The AI is not a family pool.
  • Copilot in Excel needs the file saved with AutoSave, which means it is saved to OneDrive. It does not run on an unsaved file.
  • AI features are not in Microsoft 365 Basic.
  • Usage is capped. Personal and Family are “higher than free.” Premium is “extensive.” Pro is the highest of the four. When the allowance is gone, that feature waits until it resets. Microsoft points you to Services & subscriptions in your account to see what is left.

If you already pay for Personal at CAD $11.50 and you live in Word and Outlook, try the Copilot that is already in the subscription before you buy a second assistant. If you are choosing a new plan because you want more AI headroom, Premium at CAD $27.00 is the step Microsoft describes as extensive use. Pro at CAD $135.00 is a long way up for a solo user. Most people should feel the Premium limit before they pay that.

What Copilot does inside the apps

Microsoft describes Copilot in the desktop apps as help to draft, edit, and summarise in Word and Outlook, analyse in Excel, and build a presentation outline in PowerPoint. The Copilot app on its own is a separate chat for questions and drafts. The in-app Copilot is the one that can see the file you have open, within the limits of the plan and of your permissions.

Take a real spreadsheet already in OneDrive and a real Outlook thread. If those two save you time in a week, the subscription is doing the job. If you export everything into another chat, you are paying twice. Copilot does not import another assistant’s chat history. Microsoft’s FAQ says you upload exported files and recreate preferences yourself.

When ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini is the better spend

Read ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for the numbers. The choice in one paragraph:

  • Your files are in Google: Google AI Plus is C$6.99 a month, and Google AI Pro is C$26.99, both in Canadian dollars on Google’s Canadian page. Pro is in the same neighbourhood as Microsoft 365 Premium’s CAD $27.00, and it is the wrong comparison if you also need Word and Outlook on the desktop. It is the right comparison if you do not.
  • You write long documents and you are not tied to Microsoft: Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month with $200 billed up front. Claude does not mark those figures as Canadian dollars. If they are US dollars, the Bank of Canada rate of 1.4097 on 19 Oct 2026 is about C$28.19 or about C$23.96 before tax and before a card fee.
  • You want ChatGPT’s toolset: the pricing page lists Plus and the other tiers and, on 20 Oct 2026, showed no dollar amounts. See the vendor site. Do not let an old blog’s Canadian price make the decision.

Buying Microsoft 365 only for a chatbot, when you do not want the apps, is the expensive path. Buying a second chatbot when Copilot already sits in the apps you use all day is the other expensive path.

Business seats

On Microsoft’s Canadian Copilot pricing page, Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot is CAD $31.90 per user a month on annual billing, and Business Premium with Copilot is CAD $43.40, plus applicable tax. With a 13% Ontario illustration, that is about C$36.05 and about C$49.04, before usage.

The Copilot Business add-on is CAD $24.43 for the first year, through 31 Dec 2026, and CAD $28.50 after that. The offer window on the page runs from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2026. Read the offer next to the button before you budget a second year.

Copilot Cowork, Autopilot, and Code are usage-billed with Copilot Credits on top of the licence. Set a spend cap in Cost Management before you turn them on. I am not quoting a separate small add-on just for Excel. I could not confirm one flat price of that kind. Agents in general are in AI agents for small business.

Copilot in a work tenant follows the organisation’s permissions. A personal Microsoft 365 login does not bypass a company policy. If your employer has rules about AI on work files, those rules win. The paid report can look at the tenant you described. This page cannot see it.

Teams Phone Agent

Teams Phone Agent is an AI receptionist inside Teams Phone. Microsoft’s setup document says it is delivered through usage-based billing with Copilot Credits. There is no flat per-call price on that page. You have to turn on usage-based billing and a spending policy. If the policy is missing, or the credits run out, it behaves as an auto attendant until credits are available.

The phone licence is separate. Teams Phone Standard is listed at CAD $13.60 per user a month, paid yearly, plus applicable tax. That is the line, not the AI usage.

This is for a business that already pays for Teams Phone. It is a poor fit for a shop on a mobile phone. Trades and salons that are not on Teams are better looking at the receptionist notes in the trades guide and the salon guide. Put a spending cap on any usage-billed phone tool, and hear it on real calls before customers do.

Do not pay twice

A common stack is Microsoft 365 Premium at CAD $27.00, which already includes Copilot for the owner, plus a second assistant in the C$25 to C$30 band. That second fee is worth it only when the second tool does a job Copilot is not doing: a codebase, a Google-only office, or a writing workflow you have already proven in Claude or ChatGPT.

If you have not opened Copilot in Word or Outlook for a week, do not add another subscription. Use the one you have. If Copilot’s limits stop a real task, then look at Premium, at Pro, or at one outside assistant. Not all three.

Annual Microsoft billing is CAD $115, $145, or $270 on Personal, Family, and Premium. Monthly is the kinder way to learn whether you use it. You can move to the year once the habit is real.

What the paid PDF adds

Whether your tier is worth keeping, what your month actually costs once tax and the second tool are in the pile, and the prompts and setup steps for the apps you use. That part is written from your form. It is not on this page.
